Who should I see for TMJ in Calgary – a dentist, a physiotherapist or a surgeon?

It is one of the most common questions we hear at a first TMJ visit: who is actually supposed to treat this? The honest answer is that jaw pain sits between several professions, and the right first stop depends on what is going on. Here is how it usually works in Calgary.

The short answer

Start with a thorough assessment by someone who looks at the joint, the muscles and the bite together – usually a dentist with a focus on TMJ, working with a physician. Most jaw problems settle with conservative care: a custom appliance, muscle treatment, habit changes and, where needed, therapeutic injections. Surgery is for the small minority whose joint itself is damaged, after the conservative options have been tried.

Your family doctor

A good place to start if you are not sure the jaw is the problem. A physician rules out other causes of face pain and headache – ear infections, sinus problems, nerve pain, migraine – and can prescribe short-term medication. A dentist with a TMJ focus

The jaw joint, the chewing muscles and the teeth form one system, and a dentist is the one who examines all three. A TMJ assessment at Westside looks at how you open and close, where the muscles are tender, how the teeth meet, and – with a 3D CBCT scan – the joint itself. A physiotherapist

Physiotherapists who treat the jaw work on the muscles, the neck and posture with hands-on therapy and exercises, and some use dry needling. This is a good fit when neck and shoulder tension is a big part of the picture. We refer patients to physiotherapy and receive referrals from physiotherapists – the two approaches work well side by side.

An oral surgeon

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat the joint surgically – from a joint wash-out (arthrocentesis) to open-joint procedures – when imaging shows damage that will not settle and conservative care has not helped. If your assessment points that way, we refer you with your records and scan.

When not to wait
