Tongue Tie
Tongue tie – medically known as ankyloglossia – occurs when the frenulum (the band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth) is too short or tight, restricting the tongue’s range of motion. In infants, this most commonly affects breastfeeding. In children and adults, it can impact speech, swallowing, jaw development, and airway health. At Westside, we treat tongue tie with Solea laser frenectomy – a fast, precise procedure with minimal bleeding, no stitches, and a significantly faster recovery than traditional surgical methods.
How we treat it: A laser frenectomy releases the restrictive frenulum tissue using our Solea laser in a procedure that typically takes a few minutes. There is no drill, minimal discomfort, and no stitches required. For infants, the procedure allows immediate return to breastfeeding. For older children and adults, we often pair frenectomy with myofunctional therapy to retrain the tongue’s resting posture and movement patterns following release.
