Night Guards for Teeth Grinding & Sports Mouthguards in Calgary SW

Teeth grinding (bruxism) – the signs

Most people who grind or clench their teeth do it in their sleep and only find out from a partner, a dentist, or the damage. Common signs:

  • Flattened, chipped or worn-looking teeth
  • A sore or tired jaw in the morning
  • Headaches, especially in the temples
  • Teeth that have become sensitive to cold
  • Clicking or tightness in the jaw joint
  • A partner who hears grinding at night

Grinding wears enamel, cracks fillings and crowns, and keeps the jaw muscles working all night. A custom night guard protects the teeth and takes the load off the joint; when grinding comes with jaw pain or headaches, a TMJ assessment looks at the whole picture.

Protecting Your Smile Every Day

Whether you are an athlete or simply active in daily life, your teeth can face sudden risks. From sports and outdoor activities to an accidental trip or fall, dental injuries can be painful, costly, and time-consuming. A custom mouthguard is a simple and reliable way to keep your smile safe before damage occurs.

Finding the Perfect Mouthguard for Your Needs

With so many options – stock, boil-and-bite, custom – you might feel overwhelmed. Stock and boil-and-bite options are affordable and easy to find, but they rarely deliver the comfort, fit, or protection of a professionally designed custom mouthguard.

Teeth Grinding & Protective Nightguards

Bruxism, or grinding and clenching, wears down enamel, causes jaw tension, and can lead to headaches. A custom nightguard shields your teeth and eases muscle strain while fitting snugly. Using digital scans, we craft a nightguard that supports both your oral health and restful sleep.

Tailored Comfort & Dental Wellness

We design custom mouthguards that feel great and offer reliable protection. A well-fitted guard cushions your teeth from impact, reducing the risk of chips, breaks, or tooth loss during physical activity.

Snug & Secure Fit

Custom-made to match your exact bite pattern, our mouthguards stay firmly in place. Unlike generic versions, they won’t shift mid-activity, so you can focus fully on the moment without distraction.

Enhanced Performance

Wearing a mouthguard often improves breathing and reduces jaw tension. Whether on the field or the trail, you stay comfortable and can perform at your best.

Safer Against Impact

A properly fitted guard helps absorb shock and reduce force on the jaw and head, potentially lowering the risk of concussion during contact activities.

Will a night guard stop me grinding?

It stops the damage, not always the habit – the guard takes the force so the teeth and joint do not. Where stress drives the clenching, EXOMIND™ TMS and the mind & wellness program can help with the cause.

Can I just buy one at the pharmacy?

Boil-and-bite guards are bulky and often make clenching worse. A custom guard is thin, made from a digital scan of your teeth, and adjusted to your bite.

Is grinding the same as TMJ?

Not always, but they travel together. If you also have jaw pain, clicking, locking or headaches, start with a TMJ assessment rather than a guard alone.

Does my child need a night guard?

Children often grind as teeth come in and usually stop. Grinding plus snoring, mouth breathing or restless sleep is worth a children's sleep assessment.

Does insurance cover a night guard?

Many dental plans cover a night guard every few years. We check your plan and bill directly where we can; the fee follows the Alberta Dental Fee Guide.

When jaw pain has a stress driver – EXOMIND™

Some jaw pain is mechanical. Some is a stressed nervous system showing up in the masseter. For the second group, Dr. Sabah Jarullah, our on-site family physician, may recommend a course of EXOMIND™ transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) alongside your dental treatment, so the driver is treated as well as the joint.

Who it may help

People whose jaw pain, clenching or grinding flares with stress, anxiety or poor sleep – where the muscles are responding to the mind as much as to the bite.

How it fits

As an adjunct to the dental plan – appliance, Solea, EMFACE® or EMVITAL® – not a replacement for it. Dr. Sabah screens and assesses every patient first; Dr. Z and Dr. Sabah coordinate the combined plan.

The evidence

TMS for stress-driven bruxism and TMJ pain is an emerging application supported by the underlying mechanism – stimulation of the prefrontal region that regulates mood and stress – and by ongoing research. It is discussed case by case at your assessment and documented as such.

How Westside helps with teeth grinding – bruxism

Jaw, facial and musculoskeletal pain at Westside is assessed by Dr. Sabah Jarullah, our on-site family physician, and Dr. Zubaida Hussain together – so the joint, the muscles and the drivers behind them are treated as one problem. Options include EMVITAL® high-intensity laser therapy and EMFACE® jaw-muscle treatment on the medical side of the clinic, therapeutic jaw-muscle injections, custom guards and, where stress drives the clenching, EXOMIND™ TMS.

We are in West Springs, Calgary SW – Suite 1120, 930 – 85th Street SW – serving Aspen Woods, Cougar Ridge, Springbank and the surrounding communities.
