Jaw Pain & TMJ in Calgary SW

Jaw Pain & TMJ

Jaw pain, clicking, popping, difficulty opening your mouth, or a jaw that feels locked or tired – these are the hallmarks of TMJ dysfunction (temporomandibular joint disorder), and they affect far more people than most realise.

Common symptoms:

  • Jaw pain or soreness – especially on waking
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening/closing
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Headaches, particularly in the temples
  • Neck and shoulder stiffness
  • Ear pain or fullness
  • Facial muscle fatigue or tension

How we treat it: We assess your jaw comprehensively and recommend an effective combination of treatments for your case. EMFACE® uses Health Canada-licensed muscle stimulation to directly rehabilitate the jaw’s elevator muscles. Therapeutic jaw-muscle injections relax an overactive masseter muscle. Custom mouth guards protect teeth and reduce joint strain from nighttime grinding.

This care is provided on the medical side of Westside under Dr. Sabah Jarullah, family physician. Every patient begins with a medical assessment; insured visits are covered under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. No referral needed.

How Westside helps with jaw pain & tmj

Jaw, facial and musculoskeletal pain at Westside is assessed by Dr. Sabah Jarullah, our on-site family physician, and Dr. Zubaida Hussain together – so the joint, the muscles and the drivers behind them are treated as one problem. Options include EMVITAL® high-intensity laser therapy and EMFACE® jaw-muscle treatment on the medical side of the clinic, therapeutic jaw-muscle injections, custom guards, myofunctional therapy and, where stress drives the clenching, EXOMIND™ TMS.

We are in West Springs, Calgary SW – Suite 1120, 930 – 85th Street SW – serving Aspen Woods, Cougar Ridge, Springbank and the surrounding communities.

EXOMIND™ for Stress-Driven Jaw Pain

Some jaw pain is mechanical. Some is a stressed nervous system showing up in the masseter – clenching and grinding that flare with stress, anxiety or poor sleep. For those patients, Dr. Sabah Jarullah, our on-site family physician, may recommend a course of EXOMIND™ transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) alongside the dental plan – appliance, Solea, EMFACE® or EMVITAL® – so the driver is treated as well as the joint.

EXOMIND™ for stress-driven bruxism and TMJ pain is an emerging application supported by the underlying mechanism and by ongoing research; it is discussed case by case at your assessment, and Dr. Z and Dr. Sabah coordinate the combined plan.
