Kids remember the needle, not the filling: laser dentistry for children

Ask an adult who avoids the dentist where it started and the story is usually a childhood one: the needle, the numb lip they chewed on the way home, the sound of the drill. The filling itself is long forgotten. That is why the first few visits matter so much – and why, at Westside in West Springs, children’s dentistry is built around the Solea® laser.
What changes with a laser
- No needle for most fillings. The laser removes decay gently enough that most children need no freezing – no injection to dread and no numb lip afterwards.
- No drill sound or vibration. The laser works with light and a cool mist of water. Children wear fun protective glasses and can listen to headphones.
- Shorter, calmer visits. Without numbing to wait for, treatment starts sooner, and more than one tooth can often be treated in the same visit.
- Nothing to bite afterwards. No numb cheek or tongue means no accidental bites on the way home – a small thing that parents notice.
What we do for children
Exams and cleanings with our hygiene team, fluoride and sealants, fillings with the laser wherever Dr. Zubaida Hussain judges it suitable, sports mouthguards, and tongue-tie and lip-tie release for babies and children. From age two we also screen for signs of sleep-disordered breathing – snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep – because the airway and the way a child’s jaw grows are connected; you can read about children’s sleep and airway care here.
Helping a nervous child
We go at the child’s pace: show the glasses and the mist first, let them hold the suction, count the teeth together. A parent is welcome in the room. For children who are very anxious, nitrous oxide – laughing gas – is available and wears off within minutes of the mask coming off. The goal of a first visit is a child who is happy to come back, not a child who sat through everything on day one.
When to bring them
Canadian dental associations suggest a first visit within six months of the first tooth, or by the first birthday. Early visits are short and friendly – a look, a count, a chat about brushing and bottles – and they make later visits ordinary. If your child has not been seen for a while, there is no judgment; just book.
Cost and coverage
We follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide and bill most insurers directly. Children of eligible families are covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which we accept – bring the welcome letter to the first visit. Any amount not covered is explained before treatment starts.
Westside is in West Springs, Calgary SW, with evening appointments on Tuesdays and alternating Saturdays. Families are welcome, and no referral is needed.
Questions patients ask
Is the laser safe for children?
Yes. Solea is used for children’s fillings and tongue-tie releases at Westside, with protective glasses and a cool water mist. Dr. Zubaida Hussain confirms at the exam whether it suits a particular tooth.
Will my child need freezing?
For most laser fillings, no. If a deeper filling needs freezing, we tell you first and use a numbing gel before any injection.
What age should a child first see the dentist?
Within six months of the first tooth, or by the first birthday. Early visits are short and are mostly about getting comfortable.
Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan cover children?
Yes – children in eligible families are covered. Bring the CDCP welcome letter or member card and we submit the claims for you.
